BIOADAPTED

BIOADAPTED is a theatre reenactment investigative documentary with actors portraying real people and scientists, paired with humorous and eerie fictional pieces about what our future might look like if the AI propagates in unethical ways that don't serve humankind.

Bioadapted employs texts about AI, some of which have been generated by GPT-3. An EEG headset will generate BCI (brain-computer-interface) instructions for the movement of an actor linked with a haptic vest and LED lights sewn into the costume. In the grand finale the audience will put GPT-4 on trial and interrogate it directly in real time.

"Sleekly designed and thoughtfully assembled” with “maverick creativity”.
“Ferme [is] nudging us toabandon our passivity, curb the excesses of A.I and create the societywe want rather thansubmitting to somegrim techno futurethat we assume isinevitable.”
"Bioadapted is engrossing, well paced, and consistently visually impressive, andits intermixing of fact and fiction seemsquite fitting for thinking about GPT andsimilar A.I.s. So see it now, while it's stillonly partly documentary."

CONTENT

The starting point of BIOADAPTED is Researcher and MIT Fellow Heidi Boisvert’s TED-Talk, which explores the measurement of how technology impacts us using biodata. Boisvert’s work also involves developing an algorithm to generate bio media, aiming to inspire empathy and drive social change. This concept served as the inspiration for the creation of the play “Affinity,” written by WGA-Award-nominated Alexis Roblan.

Throughout the production, excerpts from “Affinity” are interwoven with an AI-generated letter to humanity titled “The Guardian Published,” which was crafted by the powerful new language generator, GPT-3 from Open AI. Also featured are “Singular” scenarios depicting potential futures of the singularity, a collaborative effort between James Yu and GPT-3. Tjaša Ferme’s “Future Couples” and documentary transcripts from various panels and interviews contribute to the narrative.

In a captivating climax, the audience engages in real-time interaction, putting GPT-3 on trial and subjecting it to questioning.

INNOVATION

An EEG headset will generate BCI (brain-computer-interface) instructions for the movement of an actor linked with a haptic vest and LED lights sewn into the costume. In the grand finale the audience will put GPT-4 on trial and interrogate it directly in real time.

IMPACT

Our goal is to investigate, interrogate, and educate all while delivering a unique, interactive, science-enhanced experience. AI regulation and its implementation in government systems concerns all of us, and through our process of blending art and science, we make these issues “digestible” empowering audiences to become active decision makers and alert citizens protecting their own agency and human sovereignty.
